A
Recently I had a conversation in Beijing with an adult Chinese friend who was complaining how difficult it was to study English..No surprises there. It is a difficult language to master, just like Chinese. I made a few suggestions based on my~experience. One involved a very valuable fact which I learned from my high school Latin and Greek teacher, Dr. Smith. He is a gifted linguist (語言學(xué)家),and has an amazing ability to memorize things, like poetry, essays, speeches, etc.His advice to us students is that for memorization purposes, there is forty minutes each day in which our memory is more receptive than it is during the other 23 hours and 20 minutes.
This 40-minute 'super memory' period is divided into two parts: the 20 minutes before we sleep, hnd the 20 minutes after we first awake. The theory supporting this is pretty simple. First, the last information we input into our brain before bed has a better chance of taking root than information obtained during the noisy daytime; and, second, our mind is free of disturbance when we first awake in the morning一so more receptive to inputs, like a blank slate(石板).
I took the advice to heart and it served me well in my school years. In my university days, our Chinese teacher would assign us 200 new vocabulary words each day, on which we would be quizzed the following day. Without the 'magic' 40-minute technique, there‘s no way I would have passed those daily quizzes.
As far as language study goes, it‘s not only useful for memorizing vocabulary. It‘s also a very useful window of time to listen to the language we‘re studying even with background noise, and even if it‘s at a level we find difficult to understand. It might be audio(聲音的)language study aids, or just radio, TV or whatever.
Beyond our years of formal education, memory skills are hugely important in any career. How many times have we heard a speaker read their speech from. a prepared text, or read the word-by-word content of a PowerPoint presentation as they present each slide? These are annoying, boring, and ineffective ways of communicating. They are almost guaranteed to lose the audience‘s close attention and interest, let alone persuade or inspire anyone to do anything. And yet lots of people still make this mistake.
If we use the 40-minute technique, we may not succeed in memorizing our presentation content on a 100% word-by-word basis, but we‘ll be familiar enough so that we can spend much more time making eye contact with our audience. We will engage them in the process, while glancing at our text instead of staring at it. This will also free up our hands and arms to convey some extra messages through gesture.
As you see, the technique really works, but like many things,- it takes practice to perfect it. Therefore,we‘d better find ways to use the language outside of the classroom,as regularly and frequently as possible. One fundamental rule of language learning is, 'Use it, or lose it·”
Seize the‘ forty-minute learning window and we‘ll bring in a rich harvest of language learning.

Think of the last time a song really moved you, or meant something to you.Listening to and playing music affects marry different sections of the brain, affecting us physically as well..Why are we as humans so connected to music?
Making music is something that we are born with. There‘s a reason we refer to music as the “universal language”;there has been no known human culture without music,.Dancingand music came before agriculture, and possibly even before language. The fact that whale music and human music have so much in common suggests that music may exist before humans and that we may be latecomers to the musical scene rather than being the inventors of music.
We begin life being affected by music; babies first begin to respond to music even before their birth,Whether or not it‘s true, everyone has heard that playing classical music; for your baby supposedly helps him or her become smarter. A study done in the United Kingdom concluded that children were able to .recognize and even preferred music that they had heard lip to three months before birth. Although it made no difference whether it was rock music or country music, the babies who were exposed to faster songs showed a stronger preference for that song than those who had heard something slower. Researchers have also found that the playing of soft background music or a mother‘s soft singing actually helps premature (早產(chǎn)的)babies. Those who were. subjected to the music tended to gain weight faster and were able to leave hospitals earlier than those who weren‘t. However, the study in the UK uncovers no links between babies listening to music and increased intelligence or brain development.
Another experiment at the University of California at Irvine compared the puzzle-solving abilities of 3-year-olds who were given piano lessons with those of others who sang, used computers, or did nothing. The children studying the piano were better at the puzzles. Also, high school students with a musical background seem to do better in their SATs,Whether it‘s natural intelligence that helps the children do better in both music and math,or the music that helps develop other areas, you can‘t deny the benefits of a musical background.
On the other hand, it‘s possible that some music and lyrics(歌詞)could be had for children and teenagers. The lyrics of today‘s popular music are stated more and more clearly. A study oil mass media and teenagers showed that a group of 14- to 16-year-olds in 10 different southeastern cities listened to music an average of 40 hours per week. Obviously, the music they are listening to plays a large part in their lives, and especially influences self-identity. So any bad influences in the music will have a very direct effect on the teenagers. Several other experiments mentioned in the American Academy of Pediatrics‘ policy statement on the 'Effect of Music Lyrics and Music Videos on Children and Youth' supported this idea. One study from Sweden found that children who developed a preference to rock music were more likely to be influenced by their peers than by their parents. Others showed links between a predilection for heavy metal and detrimental behaviors, including taking drugs, self-killing risk, and other risk-taking habits. The American Acajeny of Pediatries (AAP) doesn‘t support the idea of censorship(檢查制度), but strongly encourages parents to monitor what their children are listening to.
50.Music is regarded as the “universal longunge” because____
51.Acording to Paragrapg 3,what afgerts bubies’ preference for songs?
A.The tone B.The specal C.The style D.The lyries

'Ok,' I said to my daughter as she bent over her afternoon bowl of rice. 'What‘s going on with you and your friend I?' J. is the leader of a group of third-graders at her camp—a position Lucy herself occupied the previous summer. Now she‘s the one on the outs, and every day at snack time, she tells me all about it, while I offer up the unhelpful advice all summer long. 'She‘s fond of giving orders ,' Lucy complained. 'She‘s fat,' Lucy mumbled(含糊地說) ineo he bowl 'We are going upstairs,' I said, my voice cold, 'We are going to discuss this.' And up we went.
I‘d spent the nine years since her birth getting ready for this day, the day we‘d have to have the conversation about this horrible word. I knew exactly what to say to the girl on the receiving end of the teasing(嘲笑),but in all of my imaginings, it never once occurred to me that my daughter would be the one who used the F word一Fat.
My daughter sat on her bed, and I sat beside her.“How would you feel if someone made fun of you for something that wasn‘t your fault?”I began.“She could stop eating so much,”Lucy mumbled, mouthing the simple advice a thousand doctors and well-meaning friends and relatives have given overweight women for years.
'It‘s not always that easy,”I said.“Everyone‘s different in terns of how they treat food” Lucy looked at me, waiting for me to go on. I opened my mouth, then closed it. Should I tell her that, in teasing a woman‘s weight, she‘s joined the long, proud tradition of critics who go after any woman with whom they disagree by starting with 'you‘re ugly' and ending with“no man would want you and there must be something wrong with any man who does'?Should I tell her I didn‘t cry when someone posted my picture and commented,“I‘m sorry, but aren‘t authors who write books marketed to young women supposed to be pretty?”
Does she need to know, now, that life isn‘t fair? I feel her eyes on me,waiting for an answer I don‘t have. Words are my tools.Stories are my job. It‘s possible she‘ll remember what I say forever, and I have no idea what to say.
So I tell her the only thing I can come up with that is absolutely true.I say to my daughter,“I love you,and there is nothing you could ever do to make me not love you,But I‘m disappointed in you right now. There are plenty of reasons for not liking someone. What she looks like isn‘t one of them.”
Lucy nods, tears on her cheeks.“I won‘t say that again,”she tells me,and I pull her close, pressing my nose against her hair. We are both quiet, and I don‘t know if I have said the right thing. So as we sit there together, shoulder to shoulder, I pray for her to be smart.I pray for her to be strong. I pray for her to find friends, work she loves, a partner who loves her, and for the world not to deprive(剝奪)her of the things that make her who she is,for her life to be easy, and for her to have the strength to handle it when it‘s not. And still, always,I pray that she will never struggle as I‘ve struggled, that weight will never be her cross to bear. She may not be able to use the word in our home, but I can use it in my head.I pray that she will never get fat.

A. Study your industry.
B. Avoid common mistakes.
C. Don‘t overwork yourself.
D. Get to know your boss better.
E. Improve your communication skills.
F. Always come to the table with a solution.
With a new year approaching, many people have an 'out with the old and in with the new' mentality一and work is usually a big part of that. If you‘re feeling that way, here are several tips that can help you become better at your job in 2014.
61。
One of the most common mistakes made by both managers and ,employees today, is that too often, both are afraid to come to the table and talk about essential issues. Taylor says,“Fear of conflict is so overwhelming(無法抵抗的),but if you communicate bravely, more frequently, and honestly in 2014, and you‘re not afraid to work through conflict, you‘ll likely reduce your stress and be a better worker.”Too much time is spent reflecting on misunderstood employee communications, which, if left unaddressed, eventually leads to conflict.
62.
'Your boss controls your destiny(命運(yùn))so it‘s in your best interest to get to know them better both personally and professionally,”says Andy Teach, author of From Graduation to Corporation: The Practical Guide to Climbing the Corporate Ladder One Rung at a Time.“It doesn‘t mean you need to be friends with them or hang out with them, but you do need to learn what makes them tick. The more you communicate with your boss, the better it is for you.”
63.
'Share ideas with context and a clear path for implementation(執(zhí)行)for the leader to evaluate. The more you present any issues with recommended solutions and then implement those solutions in a timely and effective manner, the more the leadership team will rely on you and think about you for future projects and new responsibilities,”Meador says
64.
If you‘re already an overachiever, have been called a“workaholic”,or are generally exhausted, then you need to slow down and break the habit of setting. impossible goals for yourself in the New Year. You may have to readjust and expect, say 75%of your workload to be achieved in a set period in order to feel fulfilled. If you‘re a manager, this approach may take some of unnecessary pressure off staff, too.
65.
'Your industry is changing all the time and you need to keep up with what‘s happening now,”Teach says. Most industries have trade magazines or websites that have the latest news in that industry. It‘s important to read these so that you are well informed and can discuss recent industry events and changes with your co-workers, supervisors, and management.Information is power.
